If you have ADHD, you’ve probably heard a lot about “focus” and “distraction.” But here’s the thing no one talks about enough: It’s not just about attention - it’s about dopamine.

So, what is dopamine?

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter (aka a brain chemical) that helps regulate motivation, reward, interest, and pleasure. It’s what helps you start things, care about things, and feel good when you make progress. It’s the “spark” behind action—and in ADHD brains, we don’t get enough of it in the right places.

ADHD isn’t a motivation problem—it’s a dopamine regulation problem.

People think we’re lazy, unmotivated, or scattered. But the truth? Our brains aren’t receiving the reward signals that tell us, “Hey, this is worth doing.” So even the smallest tasks, like responding to an email, doing the dishes, or starting a project, can feel impossible. It’s not a lack of desire. It’s a lack of dopamine. This is why we chase dopamine.

  • That scroll session?
  • The impulse purchase?
  • The late-night hyperfixation that felt incredible?

This is also why people with ADHD are more likely to develop addictions. All those examples...that's your brain looking for dopamine. Not because you’re irresponsible - but because your nervous system is trying to regulate itself the only way it knows how.

So how do you work with your dopamine, not against it?

Here are a few ADHD-friendly ways to boost dopamine:

  • Break tasks into smaller wins - every checkbox gives your brain a hit of reward.
  • Gamify your day - timers, stickers, fun playlists - yes, even for adults.
  • Use a reward system - “If I do 15 minutes of work, I get 5 minutes of Instagram.”
  • Move your body - exercise (even a walk) increases dopamine naturally.
  • Do something you enjoy first - starting with a high-interest task can help pull you into motion.

I also try to support my body and Dopamine with vitamin and amino acid supplements - like methylated B Vitamins (or a multi-vitamin with the same) and L-Tyrosine, but also just ensure I am consuming these nutrients through my regular diet.

TL;DR?

You’re not broken.

You’re not lazy.

You’re not bad at life.
